Here at Alsco Linen and Uniform Rental Services, we are extremely proud that we pioneered uniform rental in the United States more than 129 years ago. Since the inception of our company, we have been industry leaders that have set the standard for others to follow. With that in mind, we are thrilled that our industry leadership was recently highlighted at the TRSA Marketing & Sales Summit in Las Vegas.
Jim Divers, Alsco’s sales and marketing director, did an excellent job representing us at the conference. He appeared as part of a panel discussion on identifying and expanding new markets. Jim lent his expertise to a number of points during the discussion, not the least of which was the importance of high-visibility uniforms for delivery drivers working in high-traffic settings.
High Visibility Is a Safety Issue
High-visibility garments are already required by federal law for certain workers. For example, any worker whose daily tasks involve working within the right-of-way of a highway receiving federal funding and who is either exposed to traffic or construction vehicles must wear high-visibility clothing.
The requirements typically apply to tow truck operators, emergency responders, and construction crews. You will see them wearing bright orange shirts, green or yellow vests or similar apparel.
Alsco believes, as Divers said at the TRSA conference, that high visibility is a safety issue. It is as important for certain kinds of delivery drivers as it is for those who work on federally-funded highways. In making the case, Divers specifically cited some of the concerns today's delivery drivers face: “With streets, roads and limited-access highways becoming increasingly congested, personnel who offload goods or provide services from trucks are at higher risk for compromised safety,” Divers said. “This points to emerging demand from business fleet operators for high-visibility uniforms.”
Expanding Markets to Meet Needs
Alsco reaching out to companies operating fleets of delivery vehicles is only one example of how we are working to expand markets that meet specific needs. We recognize high visibility as a safety issue, one worth promoting among those customers that would benefit from a new emphasis on high-visibility uniforms.
We are actively expanding other markets as well. For example, we have been instrumental in helping develop new standards for hygienically clean healthcare textiles. We have been working with the TRSA for a couple of years on developing their Hygienically Clean Healthcare Certification program that we participate in ourselves.
As strong as the linen services industry is, there are plenty of needs that have not yet been met. Our goal is to continue serving our loyal customers while seeking out those needs and finding ways to fill them. That is what industry leaders do.
