Choosing the Right AED Package for Your Business

The average business owner has few opportunities to buy something that could save a life. However, if you’ve been asked to compare AED packages, this could be your chance.

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a small device that helps people who are experiencing life-threatening heart rhythm abnormalities. Some businesses are required to have one, but many versions are available. We’ll outline how to choose between AED packages to get the one that’s right for you.

What Is an AED?

Before we help you choose between AED packages, we should define what they are and how they work.

An AED is a small, lightweight, portable device that can detect abnormal heart rhythms and deliver an electric shock when they’re detected. This shock disrupts the heart muscle, enabling it to return to a normal rhythm. It is a lifesaving device used when people have a sudden cardiac arrest.

During a sudden cardiac arrest, the heart’s electrical system isn’t working correctly. Without quick treatment, these episodes can lead to death.

A person’s chances of survival drop by 7% to 10% every minute a normal heartbeat isn’t restored, says the American Heart Association. Combining an AED with CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.

The design of the AED is basic, with the goal of ease of use. With very basic training, a layperson can use an AED effectively, widening access to these life-saving devices.

Choosing Between AED Packages

Several devices are available, and they’re all slightly different. This is an important purchase, so it makes sense to take your time and decide between versions carefully. These are good steps to take:

Step 1: Examine Your Space

An effective AED program is designed to deliver a shock within three to five minutes after someone collapses. Use this guideline to help you determine how many devices you need in your business. Many organizations put them in places like elevators, reception areas, lobbies, and cafeterias. You may have other densely filled spaces that would work better. Depending on the size of your business, a few AEDs strategically placed throughout may make the most sense.

Keep notes about how many devices you might need, and measure the spaces in which you’ll install them. Those notes can help you make smart shopping choices.

Step 2: Assess the Cost

The average price of AED packages ranges from $1,500 to $2,000. Once you know how many devices you need and the size of your budget, you may be able to rule out some devices by cost alone.

Some organizations, including the Red Cross, have exclusive offers on AED packages. You may be able to use these discount programs to put the cost of devices within reach.

Step 3: Check for Certifications

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies AEDs as medical devices. While the FDA doesn’t recommend or highlight specific devices, the organization does maintain a list of approved AEDs and AED accessories. This list could help you identify brands and devices to put on your shortlist of potential purchases. A little guidance can go a long way in helping you to make your decision.

Step 4: Read the Instructions

The FDA explains that AEDs aren’t difficult to use. However, they do come with different functions.

For example, some AEDs require the administrator to push a button to deliver a charge, while others do this without user intervention.

As you’re shopping for AEDs, look at the instruction manual for each device. Think about your staff and their medical abilities. Will they be able to handle a more technical device, or is a simpler version a better choice? Weigh the pros and cons of each option before making a final decision.

Step 5: Assess Customer Service

Some AED companies provide a full suite of services. They can help you place the devices, register them, and train your staff. Others offer a more bare-bones product that you must install and maintain independently.

Before you buy, take the following steps:

Contact the company and ask how they help customers with their devices.

Ask about how they handle software updates, breakdowns, and routine maintenance.

Ensure that what the company offers and what you need are in alignment.

Step 6: Assess Upkeep Costs

All AED packages come with at least some maintenance requirements. For example, you may need to replace the battery and electrode pads, and you might also need routine cleaning services. Ask the company what replacement costs are involved and ensure these fit within your budget on an ongoing basis.

Who Needs an AED?

Experts say all 50 states have laws requiring AEDs in spaces where large groups of people gather. If you run a business like a shopping mall, hotel, or airport, you probably are required to have one (or many) of these devices.

You may face OSHA first aid requirements. You may be adept at meeting them. However, it’s worth digging deeper and determining if you need AED packages as well.
